Animal Rights Movement Has Been Launched in Cyprus

During the last few years, it has been seen that some people in Cyprus were killing animal just for having fun; as a result the number of animals has significantly decreased. But there were some who resisted. With a number of animal welfare organizations in Cyprus, animal lovers have formed a new movement that is “Justice for Animals Cyprus”, pressurizing the authorities to implement some certain animal laws.

The steering committee coordinator of this movement, Kyriakos Kyriakou, said that there was a great protest outside the Veterinary Services, but nothing came of it. It is one of the reasons why the movement has been created. The movement was made down at a news conference in 22nd June.

According to the Kyriakos Kyriakou, several laws are available but only appear on the paper. The animal welfare laws and zoo licenses are actually implemented; however, the movement wants these laws to be implanted perfectly.

Kyriakos Kyriakou also says that we would like to pressurize the government and authorities for proper implementations of all of these laws. Kyriakos Kyriakou also adds that we are concerning about the animal welfare because the public politicians are busy with other stuffs. They also have their plan on making public awareness in Cyprus.

Kyriakos Kyriakou mentioned that not only the exotic animals are imported, but they are also placed in unlicensed zoos. For an example, there is a zoo in Dherynia that doesn’t have a license but it is open. Another is Pet Centre in Ayioi Trimithias and it has worse situation than the Dherynia zoo. Although the centre doesn’t have a license, it is open for several years and also importing more and more exotic animals from several places. The Veterinary Services are unable to shut it down.
