NETWORKING and LINKS

Organizations we cooperate with

Overseas

WSPA: World Society for the Protection of Animals www.wspa.org.uk

  •  Has sponsored production of leaflets and posters
  •  Sponsored the rescue of two brown bears from Limassol Zoo
  •  Ongoing cooperation on finding a creative solution for the Limassol Zoo
In return, we have successfully lobbied for Cyprus to support WSPA’s proposed ban on whaling at the ICW forum

CIWF: Compassion in World Farming www.ciwf.org

We are the Cyprus member group of ECFAM – CIWF’s European Committee for Farm Animal Welfare. We lobby (successfully) to get the support of the Cypriot MEPs for CIWF’s campaigns (e.g. ending subsidies to EU farmers for exporting pregnant heifers to third countries where they are cruelly slaughtered, having suffered immensely on their long journey).

CIWF sponsored our founder to attend the important SENTIENCY conference in London by waiving the attendance fee.

BFF: Born Free Foundation www.bornfree.org.uk

We are the Cyprus member group of ENDCAP – a BFF’s Europe-wide network of groups working to address the problem of captive animals in zoos and circuses with the aim of ending captivity.

EUROGROUP: Eurogroup for Animals www.eurogroupanimalwelfare.org

With the RSPCA, Eurogroup has sponsored our attendance at a series of important animal legislation seminars in Europe. We have used this knowledge in our successful Dolphinarium and Zoo Bears campaignsand, now, in our Cyprus Bats campaign.

Animal People: www.animalpeoplenews.org

The best animal news and investigation journalism – from the USA but international in scope. Produces the annual Watchdog report listing the exorbitant salaries paid to staff of large animal welfare organisations. (Be sure you’re sitting down before reading it.)

BaTML: www.batml.org

A Scottish organization. BaTML’s Neil Middleton generously answered all our questions and freely gave advice when we started out with bats.

In Cyprus:

The Cyprus Green Party

Supports animal protection. Can table questions in the Vouli (“parliament”). www.cyprus-green-party.org Tel 22 518787

Your local veterinary department

This is where you make a complaint about animal cruelty or neglect. Don’t just be a whiner writing to a newspaper – take action! Use your rights! Use the law! Cyprus has an excellent animal welfare law (46/1994)
Here is the procedure:

  •  The Veterinary Department must send someone to check out the animal(s).
  •  The owner is warned and told what steps s/he must carry out.
  •  If no improvement, the Veterinary Department will return with a police officer.
  •  If still no improvement, the owner can be charged.
Phone numbers for Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos, Famagusta District Veterinary Officer can be found in the telephone directory or from:

What to say: First ask to speak to the person responsible for Animal Welfare. It is not necessary to give your name. Phone back after a few days to see if there are any results. If you find out that progress is very slow or non-existent, contact the chairman of the Animal Welfare District Committee for your area (to get the name of this person call Nicosia 22 805201).

Poisoning. Veterinary Services will carry out an autopsy. But only evidence of the poisoner caught in action can bring about a court case, and it is impossible to get such evidence.
