HUMANE EDUCATION

|
It is now acknowledged that educating young people is the way forward. ARC was founded as a Humane Education NGO. We have given many presentations to students in primary schools, high schools and Scout groups, usually in Greek.

Children and their teachers welcome our sessions enthusiastically. We produce our own Greek-language materials tailored for local attitudes and problems.

Our story, My Best Friend Jason (available in English or Greek) raises awareness with regard to the heartbreaking habit in Cyprus (but not limited to Cyprus) of tying up dogs for their entire lives without shelter from heat, cold or rain, often with only stale bread to eat, and surrounded by their own excrement.

We will now tackle the subject of Cyprus’ wildlife heritage, with the aim of fostering respect and a protective attitude. To this end we will be focusing on the island’s bats and, in particular, on the persecuted Egyptian fruit bat, Rousettus aegyptiacus.

There is great scope for Humane Education in Cyprus; however, we have not as yet been able to secure funding to pay a Greek-speaking person for only one day per week to take our materials into schools. If you can offer support in this area, it would be of immense value.
